Omega-3s reduce anxiety & inflammation
A new study sought to gauge the impact of consuming more fish oil on inflammation. Psychological stress has repeatedly been shown to increase inflammatory cytokines in the body, so the researchers wondered if increasing omega-3 might mitigate that process, reducing inflammation. Medical students in this study were either given an Omega-3 supplement or a placebo. After the study time, psychological surveys clearly showed an important change in anxiety among the students. Those receiving the omega-3 showed a 20 percent reduction in anxiety compared to the placebo group. Blood samples also revealed a lower level of cytokines in the students taking Omega-3. Researcher Ron Glaser commented that "anything we can do to reduce cytokines is a big plus in dealing with the overall health of people at risk for many diseases."
